SPACE-FILLING MODEL ILLUSTRATIONS

Does anyone know how these hatched, B&W space-filling model illustrations were generated for The chemistry of mind-altering drugs? The book was originally published in 1996 and I'm not aware of any current programs that produce these kinds of representations:

looks like an old dot-matric printout that has been scanned or photographed and scanned....

Molecular visualization like this usually relies on proprietary plugins or scripts for 3d software or environments like Java, Python, etc., coded specifically to suit the needs of the research. I have no idea what would have been standard around 95/96, RasMol has been popular for a long time, but I have used a script for Maya which imports .pbd (protein database file) or mol (molecular database) data and produces visualizations using Maya's particle system, obviously more advanced looking than the illustration from the 1996 publication. There are open source viewers like Jmol and many options for creating visualizations but if you're just trying to track down that particular software...good luck.
